Naomi Whan graduated from the University of Ulster in 2007 with a first class Honours degree in Fine and Applied Art. Since graduating she has exhibited extensively and has also been to the USA for an artist residency. Naomi has been based at Island Arts Centre since December 07 as part of the making it programme, a 2 year business start up programme for designer – makers and applied artists. The programme is run by Craft Northern Ireland and supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Invest Northern Ireland. It was during this time that she set up her business – Naomi Whan Contemporary Art.
Naomi specialises in creating three-dimensional textile art pieces for the commercial and domestic markets. Her installation works are suitable for commercial and corporate settings and her smaller scale embellishments are ideal for the home. The range includes wall hangings and three – dimensional structures. Naomi is interested in stretching the boundaries of the materials she uses, the resulting works sensitively portray the beauty of the materials but in a way that is fresh and innovative.
