Naomi Whan graduated from the University of Ulster in 2007 with a first class degree in Fine and Applied Art. In November 2009, Naomi completed the making it programme, based on ISLAND Arts Centre. This two year programme, helping designer/makers develop their business, is run by Craft Northern Ireland with funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Invest Northern Ireland.
Naomi creates textile art pieces that stretch the boundaries of her chosen materials which include fabric, paper and reeds. Her work displays an open minded approach to materials and making. A creative response, free expression and spontaneity are what fascinates her and drives her to create work. She is inspired by the limitations and restrictions of working with certain materials, as constraints can force creativity and originality. Naomi's work has been shown at exhibitions throughout Ireland and the UK and in 2007 she was artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Connecticut, USA.
